Q1. What made you pursue this career? How did you get the idea of doing something along these lines?
A career in Law is intellectually challenging, financially rewarding & personally fulfilling. For me personal fulfilment is the most important. Law is also about rights, justice & understanding more of human behaviour & society. I chose Law because it invigorates my standard of thoughts, skills & knowledge.
My father being a Retired DGC, a very senior lawyer, law is in my bloodstream. It was invariable for me to take that legacy forward.
Q2. What were some perils and pitfalls you faced during the pursuit of your goal?
Women in litigation have to confront gender bias at several levels. They have to face clients, lawyers and judges, most of whom are male, on a daily basis. So, to confront that gender discrimination and find comfort working in such a male dominated profession was a magnanimous challenge for me initially.
Q3. What kept you motivated during the difficult times?
My biggest strength was my determination. I had this strong desire to harmonize the community and create a difference.
Thus, every time I would suffer a pitfall, I would ask myself ‘Is it really going to barricade my efforts?’ And the answer would always be negative. And thus, I would spring back with revamped attitude.
Q4. What was the turning point in your life?
It all began with an unfortunate event in my close friend’s personal life. A victim of domestic violence, she was completely broken on all fronts. She failed to express her inner turmoil to a male lawyer and finding a proficient female lawyer was a challenge at that time.
I stepped in as her confidante, paired her up with good lawyers and helped her get justice. But it left me with an unswerving thought that we needed good female lawyers.
Q5. What further do you wish to pursue?
EXZ Legal (Advocates & Legal Consultants) is my brain child.
We provide advice to both Indian and Global clients with an aim to extend quality services and client satisfaction.
I also want to contribute towards legal battles of women and help ensure their rights in our society. Though I am trotting along, I still have a long way to go.
Q6. Who do you consider to be your role model?
Late Shri Ram Jethmalani, an exceptional lawyer and iconic public figure both in the Court and the Parliament, has been my inspiration.
His unremarkable courage to express his views and passionate execution of his ideas, besides being the bold voice of the needy were some attributes of his that have me as his staunch follower.
Q7. Is there a message you would like to give to those who wish to pursue this career?
Stay focused, stay motivated! Don’t get swayed by challenges. They are a part of your journey. If you have a positive outlook towards life, you shall always emerge victorious.
Never stop learning. That’s a continuous process throughout this career. All the best!!
